In order to qualify for a discharge in bankruptcy, you must complete a financial management course. In the event that you fail to do so within the time required under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code (that time period varies depending on whether you filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy or Chapter 13 bankruptcy) then your case may be closed without a discharge being issued.

Section 727(a)(11) governs Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases, and states that a debtor cannot be issued a discharge if “after filing the petition, the debtor failed to complete an instructional course concerning personal financial management . . . “
Section 1328(g)(1) governs Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases, and states that “The court shall not grant a discharge under this section to a debtor unless after filing a petition the debtor has completed an instructional course concerning personal financial management . . . “
