In 1986, Wally Backman got the ring – the World Series ring. As part of the Mets lineup from 1980-1988, the second baseman was an integral part of the winning team.
But in 2003, after a run-in DUI and a domestic incident, Backman was forced for file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Oregon. His 2004 stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks was cut short after the New York Times broke the story (through the team knew about it already, it was bad press).
Suffice to say, things were pretty bleak for Wally Backman. He managed team in independent leagues since 2004, but couldn’t seem to break back into the big time.
Now, according to this story in New York Newsday, Backman is back in action as manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. The minor league arm of the Mets is a local favorite (I go to a game once a year or so in spite of the fact that I’m no sports fan), and Backman’s shot at getting back in the game (so to speak).
Just goes to show that bankruptcy isn’t the end – even for a guy who’s been in the World Series.
